Sallie Lynn Davis began her career in 1987 with pen and ink detailed
renderings of wildlife. She was first published in Tide Pools, a
California literary journal, that same year. Having studied with world
renowned wildlife artists Robert Bateman, Simon Combes, Gamini Ratnavira, John
Seerey-Lester, Carl Brenders and Stephen Quiller, Davis is best known for
her realistic depictions of endangered animals that excite and becken viewers to share
her concern and passion for preserving them in the wild.
Sallie Lynn Davis "I intend my paintings to be more than just good art," says Davis. "I hope that people go away from spending time with my paintings feeling inspired and aware, wanting to learn more about the subject, interested in preserving nature and the environment. To me, that means realism without compromise
and calls for total honesty in the art and complete commitment to each concept."
"Moluccan Cockatoo" ©2000 A naturalist, Davis draws upon her lifelong personal experience with animals and keen observational skills to achieve in-depth and accurate representations of her subjects. "I eat, sleep, dream, and live to observe nature every day," says the artist. During a mobile tenting safari in South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe, she was able to immerse herself in the environment with the animals she paints. She strives to put down in paint
exactly what people would see if they witnessed the scene themselves. Davis' portraits invite viewers to linger by capturing the expression, movement, playfulness and curiosity of her subjects.
"Afternoon Chat, Scarlet Macaws"©2001 "Accuracy and detail are extremely important to me," says Davis. "I pour all my creative energy into making the painting speak to the viewer in a unique way. If I¹ve done my job right, the viewer will not be able to put the image out of his or her mind. It will return again and again and engage
a spark of passion about protecting and preserving nature."
Davis' talent as a wildlife artist is also showcased through her life-size murals. The time she spent in Africa provided invaluable reference for the recent completion of an 8' by 12' mural of five zebra commissioned by a private art collector. She is currently in the process of painting a
mural that will transform a veterinary waiting room into a tropical rainforest filled with birds from all over the world.
"Morning Wetland Waders"©2001
Davis' paintings and life-size murals are in private and public collections in Canada, Europe, Japan and the United States. Her "Endangered Vantage Point, Northern Douc Langurs" original pastel was recently acquired for the permanent collection of the World Museum of Natural History in Palm Springs.
Among the galleries and events where Davis¹ artwork has been featured, some of her favorites include Reflections of Nature, La Quinta Arts Festival, San Bernardino Museum of Art Wildlife Show, Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, and the Oceanside Museum of Art.

"Damara Zebra Portrait" Davis is affiliated with the San Diego Museum of Art, Artists Guild,
Wildlife Artists Association, Fathom Wildlife Preservation, Oceanside Museum
of Art and the Artists Alliance. She also serves on the board of directors
of the African Conservancy. Davis currently resides in Oceanside,
California with her parrots companions Tillie, Kai, Rascal and Kermet.
"It is my sincere wish that you enjoy your visit through my internet gallery and that you find the very painting, print or commission idea that you have been searching for."
"Remember, I am always available to discuss your ideas and, if you don't see exactly what you are looking for, we can create it! I look forward to talking with you and to creating your dream."

Sallie Lynn Davis painting "Okavango Morning"©1999 This photo is here to give some perspective to just how large "life-size" really is.
"Okavango Morning" ©1999 (Work in Progress)
Painting "Okavango Morning" has been a wonderful experience. The commission was for "life-size" zebra in their natural environment. Developing the sketches was fun and the trip to South Africa was amazing. I knew how to paint zebra but I had never seen them in their natural surroundings, so off to Africa.
In creating this piece, I discovered that I really love painting in life-size. There are, of course, certain inherent problems in working this size, however, it was interesting to work through each one.
Imagine walking into your favorite room and immediately feeling as though you are standing in the presence of life-size zebras, elephants, antelope, or . . . If you are an animal lover and would like to explore the possibilities of creating a room with a completely unique atmosphere where you can recharge your batteries or a one-of-a-kind environment in which to spend time, perhaps a life-size mural would create that special room of your dreams. Please feel free to contact me with questions or to talk about an exciting mural for your home or office. As you can see, they make quite an impression and can create a wonderful feeling in a room.

I hope to have an opportunity to see or hear from many of you who share my love for nature and the animals that grace our world. And, of course, those of you who are just beginning the experience. Please come and see my new paintings as well as your favorites at Vantage Point Fine Art Gallery & Custom Framing.

As I mentioned in my last newsletter, when I was in South Africa I discovered the breathtakingly beautiful birds that live there. Below is the latest painting in my series Birds of the World.
"Wetland Waders, Saddle-billed Storks" ©2001 Original Oil on Canvas and Prints Available Original size 48"x 36" These are Saddle-billed Storks. The female has yellow eyes and the male has dark brown eyes. The Ostrich is the only bird larger than these storks. You'll find them walking slowly and deliberately in wetlands searching for fish, frogs, lizards and the like.
Coming up over a rise these storks were wading in a pond very early one morning. My excitement was almost uncontainable! Their wonderful color and just the way they moved was so graceful. They are truly magnificent; amazing both on the ground and in flight.
"Malachite Kingfisher" ©2001 Original Oil on Board 11"x 14" The opportunity to photograph the tiny Malachite Kingfisher was positively irresistable, even though these little guys fish in the same ponds and lakes that the hippos and crocodiles call home. The kingfishers are so small and seem to always perch on the most obscured reeds that, even with very powerful lenses, you need to get quite close to get a reasonable reference shot.
In any event, I would become so focused on getting the absolute best reference photo possible that the guides felt it necessary to remind me to stay back from the edge of the pond elst I might become dinner myself.
"Afternoon Chat, Scarlet Macaws" ©2001 Original Oil on Canvas and Prints Available Original 30"x 24" South America is also known for its spectacular birds. My love of parrots inspired me to create another painting, this time of the beautiful and mischievious Scarlet Macaw.
"Backward Glance, Red Fox" ©2000 Original Oil on Linen Board Original and Prints available IN-HOUSE CUSTOM FRAMING

Although it has been my experience that they are difficult to keep as a companion bird, I love their soft feathers and color.
"At Mother's Side; Young Zebra" ©2003 Original Sold Limited Edition Prints on Canvas Available Zebras have captured my heart with the wonderful patterns in their stripes which excites my creative side. I enjoy working tension into the painting by placing the zebra where their stripes and movement creates interest for the viewer.
"African Wild Dog Portrait" ©2000 OriginalSOLD African Wild Dogs are also referred to as Cape Hunting Dogs. I was priviledged to spend approximately two hours with a pack of about seventeen of them. I can honestly say that it was one of the most remarkable experiences I have had so far in my life as a wildlife artist and naturalist. They are incredibly skillful at hunting and appear tireless with high energy and always work together for the good of the pack.
They are lean and lanky with short sparse fur that is a patchwork of black, white and varying shades of ocher. Each one has its own pattern in that no two are ever marked the same and their coat pattern is actually like their fingerprint. They all, however, have a white tip on their tail and, of course, they have those hugh, round ears. ("The better to hear you with, my dear").
